Volunteers beyond the basics
If it’s one talent you have, be a good steward with it and use it. Getting people “beyond the basics” is the same principle.

Getting Volunteers Beyond the Basics: Seek to Multiply Ourselves

God made us all smart in different areas of our life. Not for us to keep it to ourselves, though, but to be a blessing to other people.

Knowing basic concepts in the media field can make you look smart, but do you really know and understand what you’re doing? God made us all smart in different areas of our life.

Look at people’s hearts. They might not be good at one area, but amazing at another!

Not for us to keep it to ourselves, though, but to be a blessing to other people.

I think scripture helps us out in so many areas on this. One area is the parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14-30. Each servant i.e., each one of “us,” have been trusted to multiply ourselves, pass on our gifts which God has given us to other people. Some people have more to give than others!

Other people only have one thing to bring to the table. And that’s O.K.! That’s why God gave them to you, and me! Each gift or talent is important.

If it’s one talent you have, be a good steward with it and use it. Getting people “beyond the basics” is the same principle. Taking people to the next level in learning or being, is the same thing!

Use what God has given you!

I’ve talked to some people that believe so wholeheartedly that God was going to just drop that right person (relationship) right in their lap. Or a million dollars. Or a specific job in their hands. Without doing any work at all.

Although God can do anything He wants, and I still believe that miracles can happen, I’ve always seen that putting forth an action or effort is what brings things about.

Volunteers need this same concept! Congregations need the same action. As well as small groups. The hand needs the arm!

I haven’t walked through some of the hard things that some of you have, but some things I have! When you’ve walked though something, you can speak to it. It holds more weight.

We all need each other!

So, I am going to lay out one of my gifts to you. Hopefully you will find a way to multiply it.

  1. Be an encourager!

Look at people’s hearts. They might not be good at one area, but amazing at another!

  1. Repetition, repetition, repetition, because practice does make perfect …

If I say the same thing constantly every day, and another person says it, and they fall over backward by how revealing it is to them … what’s our response? I told that to you already! LOL!

Same thing here! Look for people to help relay the message or teaching concept.

  1. Pay attention to where a person is at in their training. Take the time to understand their way of thinking or how they are trying to grasp the concept.

Knowing your way might not always be the best way for people to understand or grasp, but constantly looking for other ways to explain the same thing can help your volunteers grow. A different way of teaching might be life giving to them. This way of teaching works great, if you have kids working within your media organization.

Don’t give up! Help is on its way!

Be an encourager, Repetition is key, Pay attention. These small tools will be big tools toward getting people beyond the basics and on to the next level of growth.
