Real “St. Elmo’s Fire” Hits Tennessee Church

Restored new church within the walls of historic facade

When St. Elmo United Methodist Church in Chattanooga, Tenn., called Marietta, Ga.-based CDH Partners for help renovating its fire-ravaged church, at first the architecture firm thought it was a prank. Yet after hearing the church's story and its wishes to save as much as possible from what remained of the original structure, and since the structure is in an historic district, CDH found a way to preserve three exterior walls.

In the end, the church was able to get the best of both worlds—a new church within the walls of its historic façade. Watch for detailed coverage of the restoration process of St. Elmo UMC in an upcoming issue of Worship Facilities Magazine.
