GuideOne Insurance encourages church youth groups and young artists across the country to paint, color, draw or scribble away to participate in a poster contest for a chance to win $50 and have their artwork featured in a 2010 calendar.
The annual “Keeping America’s Churches Safe” poster contest and calendar features thirteen pieces of artwork representing important safety and security issues in churches. It was launched in 2003 to increase safety awareness and encourage children and teenagers to understand and cooperate with church safety practices. The contest is sponsored by the GuideOne Insurance Center for Risk Management, which also provides training, seminars and resources on important safety and security issues.
Posters should depict a scenario focusing on travel safety, fire prevention, storm and weather preparation, playground and playroom rules, youth camp safety, protecting elderly members or other situations about church safety and security. “The contest is a fun way to get students in churches engaged in a Sunday school project and to encourage both church involvement and safety awareness,” says Eric Spacek, senior church risk manager at GuideOne.
Artists must be under the age of 18 to enter. Posters should be created horizontally on an 8 ½ by 11-inch sheet of paper, using materials like crayons, markers or paint. Entries that are three-dimensional, electronically-created, glued or stapled will not be accepted. A separate sheet of paper with the artist’s full name, age, phone number, mailing address and church name should be included with each entry. Posters should be mailed in a large envelope, since entries may not be folded or creased.
All entries must be postmarked by July 31, 2009, to be eligible for judging. Please mail entries to GuideOne Insurance, Attn: Danielle Bascom, 1111 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, IA 50265. Thirteen winners will be announced by Aug. 17, 2009. Each winning artist will receive a $50 check and have their artwork featured in the 2010 “Keeping America’s Churches Safe” Calendar, of which they will also receive ten copies for friends and family.
