Big Isn't Always Better

Minnesota mega church seeks smaller sacred space for traditional worship services, weddings and funerals.

Grace Church in Eden Prairie, Minn., is a growing non-denominational church. The current worship center seats 4,200, but the church was in need of an intimate, sacred space for weddings, funerals and traditional worship services. Rather than create a new building, HGA Architects and Engineers of Minneapolis, Minn., worked with Grace Church to convert an under-utilized choir rehearsal room into a 400-seat chapel.

The chapel's design plays off the existing church's curved exterior wall, embracing the congregation and creating a sense of softness appropriate to the sacred services held in the space. Oriented along a strong center aisle, the chapel focuses on a cross set against a backdrop of stone from the nearby Minnesota River Valley.

Five new stained glass windows bring in natural light and color. A new commons space links the Chapel to the building’s lobby, new restrooms, and multipurpose room.
