Rocky Mountain Christian Church in Frederick, Colorado, mimics the landscape of the Rocky Mountains in architectural design. The Larson Group of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the project's architect of record.

Rocky Mountain Christian Church in Frederick, Colorado, is one with its landscape and local culture. Its new building sits in a picturesque area known as Carbon Valley, made up primarily of three towns--Firestone, Frederick, and Dacono--with a cumulative population of about 25,000. The area is projected to grow to nearly 250,000 over the next two decades. While the church started out with just over 400 members, its services averaged more than 1,100 attendees in the first four weeks the new facility was open.

Frederick Campus Pastor Matt Nickoson says this of the church's mountain lodge-looking facility that opened in September of this year: "We've been excited about building a facility in this community. The average age is 32 and the kids are everywhere. Those two factors drove the building design; we wanted curb appeal and plenty of space to handle lots of kids--with room for growth."

The new building is a 68,000-square-foot, $18-million facility located on 30 acres. Architect The Larson Group of Colorado Springs, Colorado, wanted to give the structure a unique DNA specially tied to the local community and landscape, and chose an architectural design that both mimics the 14,000-foot Rocky Mountains in the background and reflects the area's mining history and oil operations. Naturally rusted corrugated metal abutments outfit the structure's façade, while a mountain-esque 60-foot tower supports a 10-foot cross.

Tapping into local geography and culture didn't come without its challenges. As Nickoson reports, "Some of the challenges were oil wells with all the associated flow lines and pipelines criss-crossing [our] 30 acres. We had to negotiate with the oil company who had the right to add more wells on the property." In addition, a defunct coal mine rested 120 feet below the building site, so the builder, Pinkard Construction based in Lakewood, Colorado, along with owner's representative John Goad of Windsor, Colorado-based Western Project Management, had to wrangle site preparation issues and challenges.

The entrance of Rocky Mountain Christian Church is an 11,000-square-foot grand fellowship hall that looks and feels like a mountain lodge and is finished in stone and warm colors. A family ministry wing contains two stories of classrooms, as well as a 700-seat family theater doubling as a gymnasium. An adjacent 953-seat worship auditorium was designed as a high-definition video venue.

Alpharetta, Georgia's Clark Pro Media was the sound and video designer, while Barbizon, with offices in Golden, Colorado, provided the venue's lighting.

JVC Architects Now Constructing South Hills Church Community
Las Vegas-based JVC Architects, a firm specializing in community-based design, announces that construction is underway for South Hills Church Community in Henderson, Nevada.

South Hills Church Community contracted JVC to design its new 40,000-square-foot church facility that will be completed in two phases. Phase I consists of an entry mall that connects to a main worship area/multipurpose room, coffee shop, youth ministry, children's ministry and nursery, and administration offices. CWorks Systems' Global Media Campaign Ends, Facility Managers Win Trips to England and Hawaii

To highlight the successful conclusion of its CWorks Aware global media campaign (see June 08 Newsbyte News item on www.worshipfacilities.com), facility information software provider and developer CWorks Systems announces the winners of its "CWorks Aware" Sweepstakes.

cworks

The first grand prize winner is Handi Ridwan, an IT infrastructure coordinator in PT Amoco Mitsui PTA Indonesia (PT AMI) in Jakarta, Indonesia, who was awarded a trip to historic, 14th-century Leeds Castle in Kent, England. The second grand prize winner is Gary Wood Cumbey, a production and technical manager from Calhoun, Ga. Cumbey will enjoy a vacation to the island of Kauai, Hawaii, and a pass to Kauai BackCountry Adventures, an eco-adventure touring company.

Both customers reacted with surprise upon hearing the news of their winning entries.

"As I was searching for facility management software on Google, CWorks computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) was at the top of the list. I downloaded the software so I could evaluate the system--I wasn't keen on being a winner for this sweepstakes. I just did it for fun and I was quite shocked when they announced that I was the winner. Thanks to CWorks for this user friendly CMMS, and I definitely will recommend it," says Ridwan.

Cumbey also downloaded the free version. "Actually, when I downloaded the CWorks free version, I didn't even notice there was a drawing for prizes, much less a vacation package, being given away. I was just hunting for a good, fairly simple program that could help us optimize our facility's maintenance operation," states Cumbey.

Fiscal Planning for Brick-and-Mortar Assets Frees Up Other Funding Efforts
Fiscal planning in church communities takes on added challenges in times of economic downturn. Many finance committees and vestry members are facing the possibility of budget shortfalls and deferred scheduling for new projects as important goals compete for increasingly scarce financial resources. Prioritizing expenditures for the next fiscal year is a topic on nearly every committee's meeting agenda as they finalize budgets for the next fiscal year.

Among the top priorities on the financial agenda, according to Annapolis, Maryland-based Miller + Dodson Associates Inc., capital reserve consultants, should be protecting, preserving, and enhancing the brick-and-mortar assets for which churches have stewardship responsibility. Sanctuaries, educational buildings, fellowship halls, and other facilities have been planned, financed, built, and cared for by previous generations of dedicated church members. Their memories are honored by maintaining and preserving these facilities. Yet it becomes a difficult decision when church staff is forced to choose between maintaining what exists and funding another long-sought goal, such as replacing the sanctuary roof or funding the new youth outreach program.

An important planning tool is available to churches--a tool that has long been used by residential community associations: Replacement Reserve Studies. These studies were developed to ensure that adequate funding exists in the annual budget for large long-term replacement projects such as roads, clubhouse roofs, pool facilities, and other community amenities. And by planning this funding, community members protect themselves against large special assessments while enjoying the ability to preserve and enhance the quality of their communities.

The benefits of Replacement Reserve Studies are particularly applicable to church congregations and parishes, reports Pete Miller, an architect and principal with Miller + Dodson Associates. "These studies help ‘institutionalize' the physical brick-and-mortar assets that the church must eventually replace, such as roofs, windows, parking lots, and heating systems, to name a few. When proper long-term planning for these future expenditures is included in the annual budget, we can be confident that replacement of the many components that make up our brick-and-mortar assets can be paid for. We are then freed up to concentrate our financing efforts on the more ‘forward-looking' projects."

According to Miller, this also means that churches don't have to constantly approach more generous donors about things like roof replacement that can be properly budgeted. "We can save their participation for those more exciting and important projects with which they would be anxious to have their names and dollars associated," he adds.

Ascension introduces the expanded Ascension Virtuoso Vertical Wheelchair Lift product line, featuring both permanently installed and portable lifts.

The new Ascension Virtuoso Model 5460F permanently installed vertical lift can be used for any type of construction work (new, renovations, modernizations) or building code requirements. The lift offers a distinctive, modern approach to vertical accessibility, according to the company, and gives building owners, facility managers, architects, and specifiers another design choice.

The Ascension Virtuoso Model 5460P portable vertical lift is reportedly the preeminent solution when churches want the versatility and convenience of a lift for multiple locations, and can help facilities achieve ADA compliance. The lift can be used when and where needed, and then stored away.

ecotrap
The EcoTrap system for Waterless No-Flush urinals can reportedly last more than six months.

Waterless Offers EcoTrap for No-Flush Systems
The EcoTrap for No-Flush urinals, manufactured by Waterless, uses the patented vertical EcoTrap drain insert system. The system works on the principle that urine passes through a floating layer of biodegradable BlueSeal sealant, forms a barrier that prevents sewer odors from escaping, and then overflows into drainpipes below.

The EcoTrap system lasts up to six months and beyond, and costs up to 75% less than other trap systems, according to Waterless.
