Who’s (or what’s) your baby?
Inside the mind of a facility manager and other close up views of WFX Fall 08

They obsess over water spots on the ceiling. They carefully consider where on the floor Pledge particles may fall when they polish a wooden hallway door. They see bumps in exterior concrete walkways as potential Grand Canyons of disaster. Who are these souls that spot things normal mortals often overlook? They’re church facility managers. And we should all be grateful for their unique perspective on the buildings where we worship.
The first day of conferences at WFX Fall 08 helped give me insight into what makes a facility manager tick. That’s because I kicked off the conference day with Dean Johnson’s “Top 10 Things Every Facility Manager Should Know.” Dean is executive director of the National Association of Church Facilities Managers (NACFM) www.nacfm.org.
I also caught a session entitled “Reframing the Design Process,” led by Rex Miller of Mindshift and Craig Janssen of Strategic Dimensions. In this session, I got to take a look beyond traditional building methodologies and get a glimpse of how integrated project delivery and lean construction will change the future of church building.
WFX has a way of bringing new thoughts to the surface and of lending an updated perspective on old topics. All of us are here to fulfill a distinct purpose and to do our jobs with greater excellence. We all have a pet mission to fulfill, and WFX has a way of providing the answers.
See you tomorrow in the sessions and on the Expo floor.
