2014 Solomon Awards

The Worship Facilities Solomon Awards recognizes churches and their partners for excellence in facilities design, building expansion or remodeling, operation excellence, innovative use, and technical production.

Winners were announced on October 1, 2014.

North Madison Christian Church - Worship Center
North Madison Christian Church describes itself as a different type of church. So, when they came to realize their space wasn’t matching their message, they turned to Mankin Media Systems for some help. North Madison’s location was outdated and needed a complete overhaul. They wanted to design a space that was inviting, modern and created a unique ambiance while theatrical in nature. North Madison wanted to receive new systems, audio video and lighting.

Church of the King was designed to be timeless and a place to call home. From the beautiful glowing quartz wall, representing the fire the church has for Jesus, to the various gathering spaces welcoming fellowship, the principles of the congregation are all enhanced by the building’s design.

New Faith Baptist Church International - Worship Center
The new worship center for Matteson, Ill.-based New Faith Baptist Church International integrates multi-media production and distribution technology to support multiple forms of worship and extend the reach of a rapidly growing African-American congregation.

The Crossing - Worship Center
Worship at the Crossing has a modern edge, with multimedia presentations used to support the message. The atmosphere is relaxed, and the team is wildly creative in delivering the Gospel. In addition, the room supports a number of satellite campuses and online viewers. So, the experience within the space reaches out beyond the walls.

Gateway - North Fort Worth Campus - Repurposed Facility
Gateway Church wanted to provide a quality, personalized experience to its rapidly growing congregation, even across multiple Texas sites. Led by renovation design team, the Beck Group, Gateway Church was able to transform an antiquated 65,000-square-foot retail building into a place with flexible, quality and engaging space for ministry.

New Life Covenant - Repurposed Facility
New Life Covenant Church was designed to provide much needed space for the quickly growing congregation in the urban setting of the Humboldt Park community of Chicago. The church has transformed an area that was once a haven for illegal activity, creating a beacon of light within the community.

Venture Church - Hunt Club Campus
Despite great beginnings as an entertainment venue, the Hunt Club soon became a place of poor reputation and disrepair in Hattiesburg, Miss. Venture Church envisioned a new chapter for the location and purchased the property. What had been a place of brokenness would be a place of hope. Where lives were once destroyed, they could be rebuilt. Through collaboration and dedication, Live Design Group made the vision a reality.

Chase Oaks Church - Auditorium Expansion and Renovation
MEDCO Construction added 14,000 square feet to the existing Plano, Texas-based Chase Oaks Church building (Phase 1) and renovated the existing auditorium (Phase 2) for a total addition of 31,158 square feet. Both phases included the addition of stadium-style seating that increased capacity from 1,100 to 1,800 guests. Friday night and Sunday services continued throughout the 18-month schedule.

Christ Lutheran Church - Construction
With membership numbers on the steady rise, Christ Lutheran Church turned to Edifice Inc. General Contractors to build a sanctuary and youth facility to provide flexibility to its ministries. The state-of-the-art sanctuary is inviting and spacious, creating an immediate sense of awe. A project of this magnitude rarely presents itself without challenges. Despite site complications and strict schedule, Edifice successfully completed this project on time and within budget.

Asbury United Methodist Church
Churches by Daniels provided a sanctuary remodel for Asbury First United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Okla. The construction company teamed up with AE Global Media to equip the space with a complete design-build package, which included audio, video and lighting (AVL) elements.

Lakeside Christian Church - Hebron Campus - Repurposed Facility
When the local Hebron, Ks. grocery store decided to close its doors, Lakeside seized the opportunity for its first multi-site campus. T&W Church Solutions transformed the 37,155-square-foot grocery into a phenomenal 600-seat worship facility with a great children’s area and cafe area.

Friendship Baptist Church
Friendship Baptist Church's new 56,000 square foot expansion includes a 1,200-seat auditorium, spacious gathering areas, café, classrooms for children and adult classes, two-story indoor play area and more. This expansion more than doubled the size of the existing facility, giving the church some much needed room.

The Park Children’s Space at Traders Point Christian Church
Increasing ministry needs required 66,300 square feet of additional children’s space along with over 25,000 square feet of existing space to be re-purposed. Gary Larson, AIA, stated, “There is nothing easy about adding significant square footage to a ministry with 4,000-plus worshipers each weekend. T&W rose to the occasion while providing minimal ministry interruption.”

Bethel Baptist Church Rebuildings Church after Tornado
When a catastrophic tornado ripped across Alabama, the 13-acre campus of Bethel Baptist Church was destroyed. Today, a new 54,000-square-foot building rests on the once-ravaged property and includes a sanctuary, choir loft, commercial kitchen, fellowship hall, education space, ministry headquarters, offices and bookstore and symbolizes hope to a devastated community.

Cornerstone Word of Life Church - New Building
Cornerstone Word of Life’s building embodies a new design in church construction. It includes a spacious children’s area, large gathering spaces, expansive lobby and cafe. With good planning and a budget-conscious mentality, Cornerstone Word of Life was able to achieve a beautiful building that met its needs.

Harvest Bible Chapel Indy West - New Building
Harvest Bible had been in a movie theater for three years when they called T&W Church Solutions. As explained by Harvest Bible Chapel Pastor Doug Helmer, T&W understood the goals, was willing to communicate and listen well. The result is a beautiful 23,865-square-foot facility that seats over 500 in worship.

Northplace Church - Campus Relocation
Northplace Church’s Phase I, was a significant step forward in meeting the growing congregation’s needs. Northplace partnered with Lee Architects and Goff Companies to produce a 52,000-square-foot new project. It features a state-of-the-art 1,400-seat worship center, a children’s area and a spacious commons area with 22 foot-high water feature.

Crossroads Church Rebuilds After Water Damage
In 2011 the main waterline to a fireline failed inside the Oklahoma City-based Crossroads Church, destroying a significant portion of the facility. After a rebuild, the worship facility is now equipped with 10 video screens, digital electronic hardware, lighting with independent controls and presentation electronics. Also added were a bookstore, expanded kitchen and gathering space.

Village View Community Church - Expansion
Village View Church partnered with Goff Companies to maximize its existing facilities. An expanded daycare has enabled greater number numbers of parishioners to participate in a single service. This, in turn, has enabled the church to reduce its number of weekend services.

Asbury United Methodist Church - Worship Technology
The renovation goals of Asbury United Methodist Church were to provide greater clarity, coverage and impact through amplified sound and a flexible audio, video and lighting worship technology system. This system would not only bridge traditional and modern ministry styles, but also deliver a performance that would ultimately impact the entire Tulsa Community.

Black Rock Congregational was tasked with having to deliver both traditional and contemporary services in the same facility. The blending of a tradition-rooted church with innovative new technology will now serve the church for another 160 years.

Free Chapel - Audio and Video Design and Implementation
Free Chapel turned to Moyers Group to replace an aging SD video system with a modern nine-camera, high-definition broadcast video system, 3mm LED video walls and other interconnected sub-systems for worldwide broadcast. The results have given the church the tools to facilitate their next season of ministry.

Like many churches facing growth, Black Rock Congregational was tasked with having to deliver both traditional and contemporary services in the same facility. The blending of a tradition-rooted church with innovative new technology will now serve the church for another 160 years.

Cape Cod Church - New Church Building
Opening in April 2014, the new Cape Cod Church in Falmouth, Mass. has seen weekly attendance grow to 1,000, which is 75 percent increase over previous attendance. Over half the new regulars say they never or infrequently attended a church previously.

Fort Faith Children’s Space at Canyon Hills Assembly of God
Fort Faith is a children’s ministries facility located in Bakersfield, Calif. at Canyon Hills Assembly of God. It was designed by Florida-based Wacky World Studios, which specializes in custom-themed environments.
