2013 Solomon Awards

The Worship Facilities Solomon Awards recognizes churches and their partners for excellence in facilities design, building expansion or remodeling, operation excellence, innovative use, and technical production.

2013 winners were announced at WFX in October 2013.

CrossRoads Addition (First Baptist Church)
First Baptist Church of Murfreesboro, Tennessee has remained committed to a long-term growth plan for over a generation. Today, with the completion of the CrossRoads Addition, the church sees two buildings - a 1930s sanctuary and a 1970s administration and education building - bridged and made one, with modern mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems throughout.

Greystone Campus (Church of the Highlands)
The 34-acre Church of the Highlands Greystone Campus includes a 46,000-square-foot renovated office building with new 780-seat auditorium. Project contractor JOHNSONKREIS Construction took on the challenging job, maintaining a tightly monitored budget within an accelerated schedule.

Arena (Celebration Church)
Fast-growing Jacksonville, Florida-based Celebration Church worked with LIVE Design Group to conceive of a 77,000-square-foot project with 2,750-seat a worship arena and state-of-the-art audio, video, lighting, and acoustic design.

CrossPoint Church of Christ
After years of operating with no permanent space, CrossPoint Church of Christ worked with architectural firm CMA to plan, construct, and design a 18,080-square-foot, 400-seat church facility with custom baptistery, administrative office, and youth classrooms on a nine-acre site.

First Baptist Pasadena
First Baptist Pasadena has completed Phase III of its masterplan. Designed for the fostering of community and fellowship, the latest additions include a 2,500-plus-seat worship center with audio, visual, and lighting design meant to accompany the church’s choir and orchestra and to provide an overflow space for the main worship center.

North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship Church
After a significant financial setback, the North Dallas Community Bible Fellowship Church worked with HH Architects to reassess its campus requirements and develop a campus plan that is family focused.

Phase 3: New Worship Center + Education (Grace Avenue United Methodist Church)
In the quickly growing historic city of Frisco, Texas, the Grace Avenue United Methodist Church has added three new buildings to serve a diverse church community. The buildings employ natural materials in an Arts and Crafts design. The sanctuary’s soaring, exposed wood deck ceiling is supported by stone columns, woven copper wall sconces, and custom chandeliers, serving as a beacon for the city’s downtown area.

Richmond Road Campus (Southland Christian Church)
With a creative vision and an appreciation for abstract symbolism, Southland Christian Church and EOP Architects turned a long-vacant retail mall into a remarkable campus with 140,000 square-foot education facility and 49,000-square-foot, 2,800-seat worship center.

Watermark Community Church
Dallas congregation Watermark Community Church opted to engage Omniplan Architects not because of its extensive experience designed worship facilities - it didn’t have much of that - but because the firm effectively listened and creatively addressed the church’s conceptual aspirations.

Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts (Messiah College)
Messiah College can host a range of worship and educational experiences in its new Calvin and Janet High Center for Worship and Performing Arts. At the facility’s heart is the 778-seat Parmer Hall, which boasts a 116-seat choral terrace, a stage able to accommodate a 100 piece orchestra, and a state-of-the-art AVL system.

Central Broadcast Campus (Crosspoint Church)
To accommodate a quickly growing ministry and improve production of its live broadcast sermons, CrossPoint Church acquired a new space and turned to Mankin Media for integration. Replete with high-tech AV and broadcasting equipment, Mankin Media turned the new Downtown Nashville location into a state-of-the-art central campus.

Cornerstone Church
Cornerstone Church satisfied its affinity for the theatrical with the creative services of StageLight and Ardee Design. In a single month, the consultants designed lighting, scenic, and stage systems to accommodate a variety of events. The integration of conventional, moving, and LED fixtures, custom video projection, rigging, and curtains make Cornerstone a state-of-the-art multi-purpose venue.

Crossroads Baptist Church
As a congregation with several active ministries in the northwest San Antonio, Texas area, Crossroads Baptist Church serves the community at large as much as its specific congregation. As such, when it came time for the church to expand its campus, the church sought to serve the neighboring community as much as itself.

Discovery Church
With the site of its new church visible to the Sauk Rapids, Minnesota public from all sides, Discovery Church turned to Station 19 Architects Inc. for a strategic master plan. With Phase One now complete, the church enjoys a 400-seat multi-use worship space, large lobby/gathering space, and adjoining education and support areas.

Education Addition (Parkway Hills Baptist Church)
Now finding itself situated in a bustling metro region, the Plano, Texas-based Parkway Hills Baptist Church addresses a lack in community spaces for its socializing congregants. With HH Architects, it builds a spacious Children’s Education Building and connects the new structure with a lobby and gathering space that features gathering areas and a coffee bar.

Montgomery Christian Church works with architect and builder HiFive to create a 20,000-square-foot Student Center in Cincinnati that is energy efficient and oriented for teens and families alike.

Fifth Ward Church of Christ
Fifth Ward Church of Christ has actively served its historic neighborhood for the past four decades. Originally constructed in 1970, the church’s outdated sanctuary began to confine the congregation’s worship experience. Together with Powers Goolsby Architects, Fifth Ward Church of Christ realized a solution to breathe new life into the facility.

First Facility (North Pointe Church of Christ)
How do you design a church without street frontage? That was the question North Pointe Church of Christ posed to HH Architects. Using height, HH Architects created a dynamic exterior design.

LakePointe Church of Rockwall, Texas renovates its existing 4,500-seat worship room and creates a community gathering space. The updated audio, visual, and lighting equipment accompanies new seating and enhanced architectural finishes.

Germantown, Wisconsin-based Life Church teamed up with Summit Integrated Systems to design and build a new audio, video, lighting (AVL) system for the church’s facility. Two years later, the LCWI had at its fingertips the tools it needed to reach its community.

New Faith Baptist Church International
In order to fully engage each of its congregants, New Faith Baptist Church International wanted its new 2,300-seat sanctuary to offer optimized acoustics and sightlines and state-of-the-art AV technology. For this, the Matteson, Illinois-based church turned to architectural firm Harding Partners.

New Worship Center & Education Facility (Sagemont Church)
Sagemont Church began as a small outreach ministry of the First Baptist Church in Pasadena, California. As the church grew to a membership of over 18,000, however, it became clear it needed more space. It turned to Shanks Architects to replace its outdated auditorium with a new 118,000-square-foot worship and education facility - all debt free.

North Venue (First Hattiesburg)
First Hattiesburg Church had three primary goals for its expansion project add as many seats as possible, create a welcoming space, and complete the project in just eight weeks. The design team, made up of church leaders, LIVE Design Group, Southeastern Construction, and technology integrator Clair Brothers, delivered a 350-seat video venue.

Owasso First AG Church
Owasso First Assembly of God Church contracted Churches By Daniels to create a fun, family-focused space. The idea was to construct a two-story children’s wing that would be built out of the current church building. The wing would reach out toward the main road in a semicircle of windows two stories high, revealing a large and colorful play center just inside for children, ages 3-8.
