J.R. Clancy designed a custom hoist and gantry system allowing the new 18’ x 10’ LED screens at Valley Baptist Church to move downstage and lower eight feet above the stage. With the custom rigging system and control automation entire stage and audio changeovers can be completed in minutes.

Valley Baptist Church in Bakersfield, California, provides three worship services every Sunday in its 1,800-seat Worship Center—two with a choir and orchestra, and a third with a praise band playing guitars and drums. A stage filled with musicians and a choir feels grandly spiritual, but a deep, mostly empty stage can dwarf a much smaller band. Valley Baptist needed a way to update the stage look between two services without losing the ability to use video projection screens upstage. The church requested a backdrop to come down and separate the orchestra and choir from the praise band and large projection screens to move forward in front of all the backdrops.
Idibri Design began the renovation by replacing the screens with two 18’ x 10’ LED display walls, increasing the system’s movability. The challenge, however, came with the need to reduce the stage size to make the space more intimate for the contemporary service. The church needed to move the screens downstage 28 feet, and then lower them to eight feet above the stage.

Project Size: 801-2000 seats

To create this custom solution, Idibri and Pacific West Sound turned to J. R. Clancy, Inc., as Clancy had done LED gantry systems that moved up and down or in and out, but this particular system needed to do both. This system would be truly unique and custom.
J.R. Clancy designed a way for the screens to travel upstage and store flush with the back wall. The system required a custom hoist and gantry system using components of the automated PowerLine line shaft hoist. Combined, these components created a custom hoist for Valley Baptist Church. Clancy’s SceneControl® 5200 automated control console was installed as the control device for the LED gantry system.
With the system in place, Valley Baptist can now transform the entire stage in minutes. Their team can strike most of the orchestra pit and complete an entire audio changeover between services in approximately 15 minutes. Having the screens move forward has improved the dynamic of the services and the experience for the congregation. The LED screens and movable gantries allow Valley Baptist Church to place the screen wherever they need to without worrying about how the projections will appear to the congregation.
J.R. Clancy is known in the rigging industry for their custom work and Valley Baptist is a perfect example of how the engineering team can devise a rigging solution for worship spaces of any size.
